Tips on Using 5 Common Drink Garnishes

Once you've decided to pursue an exciting, lucrative career as a bartender, you're going to want to know the ins and outs of how to use garnishes to help create the perfect cocktail. The art of garnishing goes far beyond simply adding a lime wedge to a gin and tonic or a green olive to a martini. Rather, there are myriad creative ways to incorporate garnishes to add the finishing touch to a well-crafted libation. Here are some helpful tips on how to use five common drink garnishes.

Lime

Lime is often used to cut the sweetness of especially sugary cocktails. You'll often find it in rum drinks, such as the Cuba Libre or or Mojito. But it's an incredibly versatile garnish and one that you'll find yourself using with a variety of liquors, including vodka, gin, and of course for Margaritas.

Green Olives

If you're working at a high-end cocktail bar, you'll often be using green olives for martinis. For a place that serves brunch, you'll quickly grow accustomed to adding them to an endless stream of Bloody Marys.

Maraschino Cherries

These are commonly used in bars that attract whiskey drinkers. Maraschinos are found in whiskey sours and Manhattans.

Mint

To add a strong aroma to a cocktail, there aren't many better options than mint. It is most commonly associated with mojitos, but can be incorporated into a number of different summery libations.

Lemon Rind

Expertly cutting a lemon rind is an important skill for a novice bartender to develop. This is a relatively common garnish, commonly used in lemon drop martinis.
